Invar 36 is a nickel-iron alloy made up of about 36% nickel and the rest iron, along with small amounts of carbon, manganese, and silicon. Its standout feature is its very low coefficient of thermal expansion (~1.3 x 10⁻⁶/°C) between –100°C and 260°C. Invar 36 bars provide a tensile strength ranging from 490 to 620 MPa, along with high dimensional stability and good toughness. They strike a balance between being soft yet strong, making them easy to machine and effective in both ambient and cryogenic conditions.
